Choosing granite without regretting it
Granite is quarried, not manufactured, so no two slabs of the same colour are identical. A granite name describes a family of slabs rather than one exact appearance.
Notice what the colour split says about granite. Grey, brown and black together make up most of the list. That is the material being itself: granite is an igneous rock, and the speckled greys and deep browns are what the earth produces in volume. Most of the granites listed as white are really white-grey with darker flecks, so if you want a clean white, judge the slab rather than the name.
Because every slab differs, the colour code matters more here than anywhere else in the catalogue. Two companies quoting you the same granite name can be quoting different slabs at different costs. Get the name and the code written on the quote, then look at the actual slab before it is cut.
What granite is actually like to own
It gets sealed, and that is fine
Most granites take a sealer periodically. It is a spray-on job that takes a few minutes and you can do it yourself. Darker, denser granites generally absorb less than light porous ones.
Heat is not a worry
Granite is a natural stone with no resin binder, so it handles heat far better than quartz. It is still worth using a trivet, mostly because thermal shock is a risk on any stone with an existing flaw.
Movement scales up
A granite with dramatic veining or large crystals reads very differently across a whole island than on a sample. This is the single most common source of regret on natural stone, and viewing the slab removes it entirely.

Installed granite in Calgary runs $60 to $140 per square foot. Where a slab lands in that range depends mostly on how rare and how dramatic it is, which is why the colour you choose above moves the number.
